Poncitlán, a municipality in Jalisco with a population of approximately 50,000 residents, has experienced remarkable industrial development in recent years, particularly within the chemical and food sectors. This growth has been driven by the vision and leadership of Mayor Arturo Israel Ascencio Gómez, who has dedicated his efforts to strengthening the local economy and fostering trade relationships that transcend borders.
Industrial Transformation under Visionary Leadership Since taking office, Ascencio Gómez has emphasized the importance of diversifying Poncitlán’s economy. In his third government report, he highlighted significant investments in infrastructure and education, essential pillars for sustainable municipal development. "We have laid the foundations for a better future, providing opportunities for Poncitlán's residents. Today, we firmly believe that unity is essential and a key pillar in transforming Poncitlán into a place where every person can thrive," affirmed the mayor. The chemical industry has been one of the main drivers of this transformation. Companies such as COMPAÑÍA ESPECIALIZADA DE PRODUCTOS AL CONSUMO S.A. DE C.V., specialized in starch and flour production, and EFFEM MÉXICO INC Y COMPAÑÍA S. EN N.C. DE C.V., focused on animal food production, have established operations in Poncitlán, creating jobs and energizing the local economy.
Education and Infrastructure: Foundations for Growth
Aware that economic development must be coupled with social welfare, Ascencio Gómez’s administration has invested more than 45 million pesos in educational improvements. This includes installing free internet access points in communities such as Santa Cruz el Grande, San Sebastián, Cuitzeo, and San Pedro Itzicán, in collaboration with RED Jalisco. Additionally, more than 16,000 school kits have been distributed, and a school transportation program has been implemented to ensure students remain enrolled in their studies.

In terms of infrastructure, streets, bridges, and public spaces throughout all municipal delegations have been rehabilitated. These improvements not only enhance residents' quality of life but also create an attractive environment for private investment, thereby strengthening the local economy.
International Projection and Binational Relations
The industrial growth in Poncitlán has local repercussions and significantly impacts international trade, especially between Mexico and the United States. At the state level, approximately 80% of Jalisco’s food industry exports are destined for the United States, highlighting the importance of reinforcing binational ties and capitalizing on opportunities in the U.S. market.
Ascencio Gómez’s administration has recognized this potential, working diligently to promote local products internationally. The quality and competitiveness of Poncitlán’s food industry position it favorably to meet the American demand for processed and organic foods. Furthermore, global trends towards health, wellness, and sustainability present new opportunities for local producers seeking entry or expansion into the North American market.
Challenges and Future Opportunities
While Poncitlán has made significant progress, it continues to face challenges requiring ongoing attention. Global competition demands local industries maintain high-quality standards and adopt sustainable practices. Continued investment in training and education is essential to prepare the local workforce for the evolving demands of the economy. Conversely, geographical proximity and diplomatic relations between Mexico and the United States offer unique opportunities for Poncitlán. The implementation of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) facilitates trade and investment, presenting local businesses with opportunities to expand operations and enter new markets.
Under Arturo Israel Ascencio Gómez’s leadership, Poncitlán has undergone notable economic transformation, solidifying its position as a benchmark in Jalisco’s chemical and food industries. Investments in infrastructure, education, and international promotion have laid the groundwork for sustainable development benefiting residents and strengthening trade relations between Mexico and the United States. The progress made demonstrates that, with vision and commitment, local realities can be transformed and projected onto the global stage.
